Move-in day at the University of Georgia is an exciting milestone—full of emotions, energy and maybe a little bit of chaos, and preparation is key to making the day smooth, stress-free and fun. With a little planning (and a lot of patience), you’ll be finished unpacking and exploring campus before you know it.
Below are five tried-and-true tips to help you navigate move-in day like a pro. From packing smarter to keeping your cool, here’s how to make the most of your first big day at UGA.
PREPARE
Visit the MOVE IN page of the housing website and select your residence hall for maps and specifics about check-in, unloading and long-term parking locations. Review these ahead of time and save the website location for a smoother move-in day.
UNPACK BEFORE YOU PACK
New TVs, coffee makers, bedding and other items generate a lot of trash and recycling on campus during move-in. To reduce waste brought to campus and to save space in the car unbox new items before you pack. This could mean less trips in/out of the building while moving in and less trips to the collection areas for your trash and recyclable items.
Try:
- Wrapping your new TV in your new comforter
- Unboxing small appliances from cardboard and Styrofoam to save space
- Unwrap and wash new towels and linens at home
- Consolidate small items in suitcases, storage bins or reusable grocery bags for easy moving
ARRIVE
Arrive at your unloading zone during your arrival time. Your arrival time is a 15-minute window in which you should plan to arrive at your unloading zone. Once there, a volunteer will complete your unloading zone pass and you will have one hour to get checked in and move in your belongings before you need to move to long-term parking. Arrival times are staggered to reduce traffic, parking congestion and elevator lines.
PATIENCE
Even with all the planning in the world you may experience lines or delays on move-in day. Move-in days are busy but any delays or lines usually clear quickly. Maintain a positive and understanding attitude and let a staff member know if you have concerns.
ENJOY THE DAY
If you don’t have at least one argument before you arrive to campus, did you really move into college? Seriously though, transitioning to college can be a stressful time for both students and parents/supporters. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Find moments to embrace the excitement and newness of this journey. Meet your roommate and neighbors. Capture the day through photos and videos. Stay hydrated and bring snacks. Take time to reminisce about the journey that led to attending the University of Georgia and look forward to your future as a Bulldog.
