During the year, you have snagged a free shirt or two, added a new water bottle to your collection and probably accumulated more stuff in your room than when you moved in. If you want to save yourself some time and frustration later, here are a few steps you can take now to make the final move-out day a little easier.
- Take stock of everything in your space
- What has to stay until the very end?
- Toothbrush
- Bedding
- Umbrella
- Laptops and chargers
- What can go home or to storage early?
- Winter or formal clothes
- Seasonal decorations—I’m looking at you pumpkin string lights
- Spare bedding
- TVs and game consoles
- What will be donated?
- Futon you don’t need again
- Lamp that no longer fits your aesthetic
- Unopened food—can be donated to the UGA Student Food Pantry
- What has to stay until the very end?
- Start removing wall décor and packing up nonessential items
- Discuss a cleaning plan with your roommate
- Follow the plan by cleaning before you leave
- Make a list or separate any donation items
- Beginning April 30, 2025, look for donation trailers around residence halls to donate clothing, bedding and household items.
- Alternatively, donate clothing, bedding and household items to a local thrift store or the UGA Swap Shop.
- Schedule a checkout time in The Dawg House (April 17-28, 2025).
Even though the end of the year adds a lot of things to your to-do list, if you plan ahead and take some steps now, you’ll save extra trips to the car when you move out.
