Eco-Friendly Campus Living: Secondhand Dorm Shopping

Eco-Friendly Campus Living: Secondhand Dorm Shopping

Moving into a residence hall is a big deal. Everything about this step is new—new roommate, new space, and living on your own! One thing about the move-in transition that does not have to be new is the items you bring with you.

To minimize your impact on our environment while moving into your residence hall, try to limit the number of new items you purchase for college. Things like clothes hangers, lamps, rugs, mugs and mirrors can be found secondhand. This will keep items circulating rather than creating new products! Just a few of the benefits of secondhand shopping are:

  • Saving money!
  • Little-to-no single-use plastic packaging
  • Eliminating production and transportation emissions for new items
  • The opportunity to support local non-profit organizations (i.e. Project Safe and Habitat

for Humanity)

  • Landfill diversion

Pro tip: wait until you are in Athens to search for some of your decor and furniture. Once you move in, you can move furniture and take measurements to determine what you need to purchase for the space. This way, you aren’t spending money on items you may not need.

Anything you may need to purchase before your move-in date can most likely be found through secondhand shopping online. Sites like Facebook Marketplace, eBay, and Everything But The House are great starting places.

By embracing pre-loved items, you are not only making smart financial decisions, but also taking a stand for sustainability in your new community.
