  • Keeping residence halls safe and healthy during breaks
Health and safety checks this semester are scheduled for December 4–5

As the semester winds down and students prepare for winter break, University Housing takes proactive steps to ensure residence halls remain safe and comfortable environments. One of the most important measures we implement is the health and safety check, scheduled for December 4–5

Health and safety checks occur at least once each semester and serve as a preventative measure to maintain a secure and healthy living space for students. During checks, a housing staff member enters each room or unit to look for potential or emerging concerns related to cleanliness or facilities. They check for issues that could affect comfort or safety, such as maintenance needs, as well as inspect sprinklers, smoke detectors and other life-safety equipment. Staff also confirm that housing-provided furniture is present and in good condition.

Advance notice is always provided and, while students are not required to be present during the inspection, they are welcome to attend. This can be a great opportunity to discuss any questions or concerns and learn how they can contribute to a healthier living environment.

These checks are just one part of our commitment to student wellbeing. If your student notices anything that needs repair before or after the inspection, they can easily submit a work request online. If issues arise during the inspection that need immediate attention, housing staff will address the issue—which may incur a fee for the resident. By conducting these proactive checks, we help ensure that when students return from break, their living spaces are safe, clean and ready for a successful semester ahead.
