Dear residents,
Before you leave for the weekend, please put the thermostat on HEAT at 68 degrees or the lowest setting.
This small step will significantly reduce the risk of frozen pipes and potential damage to your room and the rooms of your neighbors.
We remain in communication with UGA’s Office of Emergency Preparedness, as well as local, state and federal agencies to ensure residents have the resources and support they need in case of power outages.
Announcements about operational changes—including schedule adjustments, cancellations or closures—will be made through official UGA channels: ArchNews, emergency.uga.edu, and UGA’s X account (@universityofga).

TO UNIVERSITY VILLAGE RESIDENTS
Subject: Urgent: Cold Weather Advisory – Please Leave Faucets Dripping
Dear University Village residents,
If you plan to leave for the weekend, please take the following steps to prevent frozen pipes:
- Leave kitchen and bathroom faucets dripping: When temperatures are expected to be exceptionally low, allow a small amount of water to drip from your faucets by turning on both your hot and cold water. This continuous trickle helps prevent water from standing still in the pipes and freezing.
- Open cabinet doors: If you have sinks on exterior walls, open the cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes.
- Keep thermostats consistent: Turn the heat on to 68 degrees and maintain a consistent temperature, especially at night. Avoid drastic temperature changes, as they can contribute to pipe freezing.
By taking these simple precautions, you can significantly reduce the risk of frozen pipes and potential damage to your apartment and the apartments of your neighbors.
