Incoming First-Year Students

First-year undergraduate students enrolled as full-time students, as defined by the Office of the Registrar, are required to live in campus residence halls. Students first enrolling in the summer are required to live in the residence halls during the summer, fall and spring semesters. Students first enrolling in the fall are required to live in the residence halls during the fall and spring semesters. Students first enrolling in the spring are required to live in the residence halls during the spring semester.

For most students, the opportunity to choose a space is determined by the date you register for housing and pay the $35 fee. Earlier registration = earlier appointment time to choose. Housing registration is available following admission to the university.

Steps to registration

1 STUDY UP: Check you email for a confirmation of your online registration, then research halls on the EXPLORE OPTIONS page. There, you’ll find links to rates, amenities, maps, 360-degree images, photos, room plans and videos to help you decide on your ideal on-campus space.
2 WAIT FOR IT: Continue to check your email for information about how to search for roommates and create or join a roommate group* in housing’s online portal, The Dawg House. If you have paid the university’s commitment deposit, all email communication will go to your UGA email. After the university’s commitment deadline, University Housing will issue you an online appointment time to choose a space.
3 CHOOSE: During your online appointment time, browse through available spaces in The Dawg House and make a selection. At this time, you may pull roommates into your space with you**
4 MAKE IT OFFICIAL: Execute your housing contract in The Dawg House by the deadline. If you fail to execute a contract, you may lose your assigned space.

* Although most students will self-select a space, some will be assigned automatically. In that event, every attempt will be made to honor roommate choices where space is available.

** Roommate designation in The Dawg House is available for fall admits only

First-year informational webinars on Zoom

These webinars are intended for incoming first-year students and their supporters for fall 2024. They will include a 20-minute presentation by a housing staff member and 40 minutes for participant questions.

Other important information

Most residence halls close during the holiday breaks. If you will require housing during these breaks, be sure to choose a hall that stays open
Honors Program first-year students have priority in assignments to Myers Hall, including a condensed sign-up period specifically for Myers Hall. Living in Myers Hall is not a requirement of the Honors Program. Honors Program participants should expect to have an Honors Program roommate
Some residence halls in the East Campus Village Community have contracts requiring rate payments in fall, spring and summer

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to pay the UGA commitment deposit to register for housing?

No. However, you must pay your UGA commitment deposit by the deadline in order to receive an appointment time to choose a space. Registering for housing does not commit you to UGA, it only puts you in line for selecting the space of your choice.

Is it a guarantee that I will get to choose my own space?

Although most students receive appointment times to choose, some students will be assigned a space. This could be due to a variety of reasons (e.g., a roommate pulls you into a space; you are participating in a special program; you have a later housing registration date).

Am I signing a contract when I register?

No. When you register for housing, you will pay a non-refundable registration fee of $35. You will sign/execute your contract after you choose your space or receive your assignment.

Can I choose my roommate? What if I don’t know anybody?

For fall enrollment, roommate selection and searching occur in the spring. Your roommate profile in The Dawg House can be used to search for potential roommates with the online roommate search tool. If you already have somebody in mind, you may select them once the roommate matching goes live. We’ll notify you when it gets closer with more detailed instructions.

I live close to UGA, do I have to live on campus?

Although living on campus is a requirement for your first year, students living in Clarke County and the surrounding counties can file for an exemption to the requirement. You will still need to go online to The Dawg House to begin the registration process. You will see the option for exemptions after you verify your contact information. You can find out more about exemptions above and by viewing the First-Year Live-On Requirement.

Where can I live?

Take some time to Explore Options. From there, you’ll have access to rates, amenities, maps, 360-degree images, photos, room plans and videos to help you decide on your ideal on-campus space. You’ll also find information about partnership programs that integrate academics and residence life such as THRIVE, language communities, the Entrepreneurship Living Learning Community and Franklin Residential College. Also, don’t forget to follow us on social media to see what to expect when you are here next year, including UGA Housing on YouTube, in which residents document their on-campus experiences.

Searching for and adding roommates

More information…

Students admitted for fall may use the roommate search tool in The Dawg House. This option allows you to search for potential roommates by creating a profile, and to create or join a roommate group. Each group member has the authority to assign other group members to available spaces. If you have preferred roommates, make sure to create or join a roommate group before your room selection appointment.

Searching for roommates in The Dawg House:

In order to search for a roommate or designate someone you already know as a roommate, start by creating or joining a roommate group.

Create a roommate group if…
You want to search for other students by their profile name or if you want to search for other students by answers to the roommate profile questions.

Groups can be comprised of up to two students of the same gender and class standing (for example, all students in a group must be first-year students.) The majority of our units only house two students. This means—during room selection—any remaining members will be left out. If you start a group but do not add anybody to it, you will still be able to continue through the room selection process as a group of one.

Join a roommate group if…
You already know the group name and password for your desired roommates.

You can only be in one group at a time. If you join a group after already being in another group, you will be removed from your original group. Group members in the original group will remain in the group.

Do not create or join a roommate group if…
You do not want to search for or designate roommates.

When you choose a space, your roommate/s will be whoever else chooses the remaining spaces in that unit (first-year student/s with the same designated gender as you). University Housing will send out roommate information in late July once the room selection and room change processes conclude.

To begin, log into The Dawg House using your UGA MyID and password.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get a single room?

If you are already in a single room, register to participate in room sign-up before the Jan. 21 same-room deadline. If available, you will be able to secure your current space. All other single rooms are first-come, first-serve during the appointment process. Most single rooms are in Payne and Building 1516, but private bedrooms are available in many halls, including the East Campus Village apartments, Soule, Reed and Myers Hall.

Can I stay in my current room?

Maybe. Only Brown, Building 1516, Busbee, Mary Lyndon, McWhorter, Myers, Oglethorpe, Payne, Reed, Rooker, Rutherford, Soule and Vandiver are available for room sign-up. All other halls are reserved for incoming first-year students and not available for returning residents. If your space is available, you’ll have the opportunity to tell us you are interested in keeping your room as long as you register by Jan. 21.

I didn’t get a round one appointment. What are my chances of getting assigned on-campus housing?

Up to four rounds of appointment times will take place. After appointment times, room selection will be open until all spaces have been filled.

I’m graduating mid-year. How do I know I won’t be charged for spring semester?

Call or visit us by the contract cancellation deadline (usually mid-November for fall graduation) to let us know. We want you to graduate—there is no penalty if you notify us by the deadline. The same date applies to spring study abroad opportunities.

What if the space I want isn’t there when I go to choose?

Have a backup plan. And a backup-backup plan. Until you execute a contract in The Dawg House, you can drop out of the process with no penalties. Once you have a contract, you can request a room change. We do hundreds of room changes each spring for room sign-up participants. You can still snag your ideal space when others change their minds or neglect to execute a contract.

I’m searching for my roommate in The Dawg House but I can’t find them. Why don’t they show up?

Make sure both you and your roommates have clicked the “show in searches” box at the bottom of the profile page.

How do I know I will be assigned with my chosen roommate if they have a later appointment time than I do?

Being in a roommate group allows both roommates to assign each other to a space (during appointment times or on same-hall day). If you find any room with an empty space you may reserve it for your roommate and vice-versa.

What if my preferred roommate is not in the same round of sign up as I am?

During your appointment time, you will still be able to pull them into your round and assign them a space with you if you are in a roommate group.

What if I can’t find a space for my roommate and I to be together?

You have a few options. 1) Choose a space for yourself and your roommate in the same building and request a room change to get together after you execute your contracts. This is the best option if staying together is your top priority. 2) Choose a space for yourself and any other available space on campus for your roommate. 3) Choose a space for yourself and let your roommate know they need to do the same during their appointment time.

It’s important for roommates to talk about what’s most important before logging on to choose a space. Because the process is student driven, we cannot predict what spaces will be available or where. Think about the following: Would you rather stay together and choose a different building? Or would you rather reserve separate spaces in order to get the location you want?

How do I know if my roommate chose a space for me?

Both roommates will receive a contract via email. If you’re not sure, you can always check your status in The Dawg House.

What if I miss my appointment time?

If you do not select a space by the time your appointment time expires, you will not be offered another appointment time, and your housing registration will be cancelled.

How do I request a change once I selected a space in room sign-up?

Room change requests will be available in The Dawg House after committing to the original room reservation and contract.

How do I know if I’ve secured my space?

You will receive an email by the end of the week of your appointment time with your housing contract and deadline to execute it. We’ll hold your space for you until you execute the contract. At that point, your space is secure.
