Roommate Matching

Printer-friendly versionEmail this page
Students enjoying their day

University Housing only utilizes two characteristics to assign roommates: gender and hall assignment. However, students may preference a specific individual as the preferred roommate when they complete their housing registration. After this has been completed, students may remove, change or add a rommmate preference any time (during the designated period) by returning to their registration and modifying their roommate preference. This allows students the flexibility to complete their registration early and then submit their roomate preference later on when it has been determined. Only mutual requests will be considered. More information on the assignments process can be found at Assignments Policies.

Research on roommate matching has not shown any factors or questions that can be used to predict better college roommate relationships. Instead, UGA Housing advocates strong communication between roommates and potential roommates in order to help foster cooperation, understanding and mutual respect, as well as to discuss and resolve specific issues before they become a problem. For more information on forging healthy, positive roommate relationships please visit Roommate Relationships.

Looking for a Roommate? Visit the Roommate Search on The Dawg House!

If you are (1) an incoming student for the fall term, and (2) have registered for housing online, you are welcome to utilize the Roommate Search on The Dawg House.

Roommate Search was created to provide incoming first-year students with the ability to build a basic personal profile based on a variety of questions, as well as weigh the relative importance of each point. Examples include:

  • Do you smoke?
  • What college of the University do you plan to be affiliated with?
  • During the week, what time do you usually wake up in the morning?
  • During the week, what time do you usually go to sleep at night?
  • How neat and clean do you like to keep your surroundings?
  • How interested are you in sports? (watching or participating)
  • I am interested in applying for a specific academic/speciality community in Housing. (select from list)

Space is also provided so that students may add their personal touch to their profile and any additional information to a potential roommate that may enable the reader to obtain a better understanding about the student.

Once the survey is completed, a personal profile is then generated, which the student may use to search for other students with similar responses. The Roommate Search system will rank potential roommates depending upon how closely each student's answers match the other. Use of anonymous usernames ensures that the privacy of all parties involved will be maintained until each individual agrees to reveal his or her name and contact information.

Users of Roommate Search also have an option of creating an "ideal roommate profile" using the same questions. This allows students to search for roommates who have different goals or characteristics than would be found when conducting a search based on their own personal profile.

Once a list of potential roommates has been generated using the search options, students have the ability to send a message providing a telephone number and/or email address. The recipient of the contact then has the option to either respond with their own contact information or remain anonymous.

Good Communication = Great Roommates

Just because you answered the questions similarly to a potential roommate, you still may not see eye to eye on other key issues. We urge you to review Roommate Relationships to learn about additional discussion points that you and the other student should discuss and explore before you make your final selections.

Modify your Housing Registration

If you find someone you want to be roommates with, follow the procedures for modifying your housing registration at the The Dawg House. Once you find a roommate, both you and your roommate MUST modify your housing registrations before the date indicated on the The Dawg House, to indicate your request. Only mutual requests will be considered. More detailed information concerning Roommate Search will be distributed to students as they complete the initial housing registration online.

Please visit The Dawg House if you are an incoming, new student looking for a roommate for the upcoming academic year. Roommate Search is available once you complete your registration.
